Kaštieľ Strážky

21. Kaštieľ Strážky

Dedinka Strážky zastáva svojimi stavbami stredovekého  kostola, renesančnej zvonice a kaštieľa dôležité miesto vo vývoji spišského stavebného a  výtvarného umenia. Záseky strážili maďarskí strážcovia zo Strážok a slovanskí strážcovia zo Stragaru (zaniknutá osada v katastri Bušoviec). Odstránili  vysokú strechu  a prvé poschodie. Z pôvodného kaštieľa sa  zachovali iba veže a obvodové múry. Jednotlivé miestnosti zaklenuli pruskými klenbami so štukovými obrazcami, do miestností vstavali praktické skrine. Do nádvoria a poschodia vstavali arkády. Poslednými  mužskými  potomkami  rodu  Horvath Stansith boli bratia BALTAZÁR a IMRICH. Obaja umreli v roku 1801 nezanechajúc mužského potomka. Anna Mária Horvath  Stansith sa vydala  za ONDREJA SZIRMAYA. Ondrej dal pri kaštieli vysadiť park s kanadskými topoľmi, dal zbúrať pevnostné múry okolo kaštieľa a nahradil ich ohradou s hojdavým rytmom plota.

Schody vedú do bývalej zimnej záhrady. Prejdeme do ďalšej miestnosti.

Ak to bolo potrebné, konverzovala nárečím. Ide o večernú toaletu a príklad denného spodného odevu zdobeného volánmi.

V roku 1863 prišiel do Strážok, aby vyučoval mladíka, viedenský maliar a akvarelista Thomas Ender.

,,Smer nálady, ja len to vidím vo všetkom. To hľadám takisto vo farbe ako v línii, v kvalite vzduchu ako vo vôni rastlín, vo vyčerpávajúcom pôsobení tepla či zimy.“  (14. 12. 1895, Budapešť). Okolo roku 1900 pod vplyvom impresionizmu vznikli svetlé kompozície rozkvitnutých sadov a viníc.

Symbolisticko-melancholické diela pochádzajú zo začiatku 90-tych rokov 19. storočia a vrcholia okolo roku 1895, kedy sa umelec musel vyrovnať so smrťou svojho otca.

Sám Gregor prednášal rétoriku, dialektiku a etiku. Rodina udržiavala školu asi do roku 1711, teda okolo 123 rokov.

Dnes  do knižnice  patrí približne 8 420 zväzkov, časopisov a máp.

,,Stavba streleckej  zákopy“, ,,Zákopy  v zime“  a ,,Vojaci v skalách“. Večne  nepokojný a  osamotený umiera  sám a  bez rodiny vo Viedni 17. apríla 1919. Rozsiahle a výnimočné Mednyánszkeho dielo nemá domácu  obdobu. Možno ho porovnať, hodnotiť a oceniť iba v kontexte aktuálneho európskeho, predovšetkým parížskeho diania.

Detstvo v Strážkach  prežila spolu so sestrou Marianou a bratom Štefanom .

V školskom roku 1915-1916 začala Margita spolu so sestrou Mariannou študovať na  Akadémii výtvarného umenia v Budapešti. Otca pochovala v roku 1932 a matku v roku 1937. Denne prichádzala, prinášala jej jedlo a všetko, čo pani potrebovala.

13. marca 1972  barónka Margita Czobel  vo veku 81 rokov umrela . Funkcionári mesta splnili jej poslednú žiadosť a povolili uloženie jej zosnulého tela do rodinnej hrobky. Kaštieľ sa spolu s vnútorným mobiliárom  i parkom stal národnou kultúrnou pamiatkou.

21. Manor house Strážky

The hamlet Strážky, with its church from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance bell tower and its castle, played an important role in the development of the Spiš region’s architecture and fine arts. The town was established in the 12th century, when this region was one of the northernmost protection points of Hungary’s border. The town had an important position because it secured the protection of the so-called “Polish Gate,” located on the left bank of the Biela /Bela river, where it flowed into the river Poprada, not far from the municipality known today as Bušovce. The gate was composed of a wooden surveillance tower and a simple palisade fortified the surrounding area. From the gate to Mount Vojnianska, a protective band prevented invaders from being able to circumvent the gate. Abatis protected the Hungarian gatekeepers from the Strážky side and the Slovak gatekeepers from the Stragar side, a settlement in the Bušovce area that has since been dissolved. In 1928, the Spiš district administrator Bald liberated the royal gatekeepers of Strážky of their duty to guard the tollgate and the abatis.

The first preserved written record of Strážky is a bill by King Bela IV from July 15, 1251. In the 13th century, there was no record of an aristocratic family in Strážky. But in the early 14th century, king Karol Robert gave the town to the family of the BERZEVICZY (read Berzevici), who, together with the GÖRGEY family, began settling the territory from north of Strážky as far as to the Danube. Later, the TARCAYOVEJS ruled Strážky. The last daughter of this family got married to a member of the WARKOCHA family, a Silesian knight who later became the captain of the town of Kéžmarok. Rightfully, 1526 is considered the birth-year of the Central European Habsburg Monarchy. As a reward for their support of John Zápolya in the war, King Ferdinand I. transferred all his Hungarian possessions to the WARKOCHA family, and in 1556, he gave the municipality to MARK HORVATH STANSITH DE GRADEC (read Stančič) for his contributions in the fight against the Ottoman Empire. His son GREGOR (1558-1597), a well-known humanist, reconstructed the castle in the Renaissance style between 1570 and 1590, and in 1584, he founded a Protestant school for the children of the Spiš aristocracy on its premises. He also built a library with a rather expansive book selection. After Gregor’s death, his son Baltazár (1596 –1678), who had studied, just like his father, in Wittenberg, continued his work. Upon returning from his studies, he became the director of the school, which the family ran until 1711. In 1708, the castle burned down, and unfortunately had to be reconstructed. The high roof and the first floor were removed. Two inner walls as well as the outer walls of the castle have been preserved. Prussian arches with stucco paintings covered the rooms, which were furnished with functional cabinets. On the first floor and in the staircase, arcades could be found.  The actual castle had a square shape and a courtyard with a fountain as well as a total of 14 rooms, at the time inhabited by members of the aristocratic family. The kitchen, chambers, a workshop and dining rooms for the servants were located on the ground floor. The castle also had a wing devoted to businesses. The brothers BALTAZÁR and IMRICH were the last male descendants of the Horvath Stansith dynasty. Both died in 1801. Anna Mária Horvath Stansith married ONDREJ SZIRMAY. He planted a park with Canadian polar trees, had the fortress walls around the castle destroyed and replaced them with a winding fence. The son of Ondrej Szirmay, BALTAZÁR, contributed to the founding of a library. His only daughter, MÁRIA ANNA, married EDUARD MEDNYÁNSZKY from Beckov in 1851. After her father’s death, she took care of the library and compiled a catalogue. The library played a very important role in the education of their children, MARGITA, and, maybe the most famous family member, LÁSZLÓ MEDNYÁNSZKY. His sister, Margita, got married to Baron Štefan Czóbel in 1887. Their daughter, the talented painter Margita Czóbelová, became the last owner of the castle. After her death in 1972, the Slovak National Gallery gained possession of it. It was opened to the public after a far-reaching renovation in 1991. On the ground floor, we can see a number of portraits of aristocratic family members from Strážky (Horvath  Stansith, Szirmay, Mednyánzsky) as well as of those families that were in close contact with the castle (Berzeviczy, Révay,  Csáky, Esterházy). The majority of them were painted at the castle itself, between the 17th and 19th centuries. As family ties expanded, the number of portraits grew. The family portrait gallery in Strážky provides an important art-historical testimony  that allows insight into the continuity of domestic art as well as changes in its style. In those paintings, we can see specific and evolving approaches to portrait painting, from the late Renaissance in the 17th century to the 19th century’s Romanticism. The austere Protestant portrait of the Renaissance from the 16th century was also popular in Spiš throughout the entire 17th century and remained the favored style even in the following century. A certain strictness and reservation is palpable in these portraits. The expression of the dynasty’s ancestry and its faith became an important feature. Paintings of important family members were often complemented by fictional portraits. These portraits were treated much in the same way as photographs in a family album: They were often copied so that they could be given as presents to other family members. A minimal effort to correctly depict the physical appearance of the subject was typical for the 17th and 18th centuries. Despite this, we can see differences in the individual portraits, often, they have very detailed descriptions, which name the values and achievements of the subjects and are complemented by a coat of arms. Especially portraits of females are notable for their detailed descriptions of decorative outfits and jewelry. A calculated conservatism and strictness distinguishes these works of art from those of neighboring regions.

The history of the Horvath-Stansith portrait gallery has its beginnings in the first quarter of the 18th century,. Among those who worked for this family were the painter J.G. Kramer, who lived in Levoča and later in Prešov, as well as FRIDRICH  WAGNER. In this room, we can see the epitaph of the HORVATH STANSITH family from 1588, which was originally displayed in the church of St. Anne. In the upper part, a scene from the bible, the Last Judgment,  is depicted and in the lower part, kneeling figures represent members of the family. This layout was inspired by the German, especially Saxon, Protestant epitaph as well as by portraits from the first half of the 16th century. In the second room on the ground floor, we can experience the development of portrait painting in the first half of the 19th century first-hand. The Slovak National Gallery has created a display of works by painters who were active in Slovakia, especially in the Spiš region, for example, J.J. Stunder, J. Czauczik, J.Rombauer, P. M. Bohúň, J. B. Klemens, K.Tibelly and others. In the space under the stairs, we can see a wooden trunk from the late 19th century. A commemorative cresting from the year 1622, which is hanging on the right wall, deserves our attention. It is from the church of St. Anne in Strážky, just like this portrait of a country gentleman from the 18th century. Ascending the wooden staircase, we make our way into the dining room. The round table, the chairs as well as the upholstered bench are from the second half of the 19th century. The precious neo-Baroque secretary was manufactured in the 18th century and features the coat of arms of the last owners of the castle. The stairs lead to the former winter garden. The corner cabinet is the only piece of furniture in this room that was not part of its original furnishings. It was manufactured in the second half of the 18th century. Porcelain figures from different places across western Europe are displayed in it.  Interesting to note is this portrait of a girl from Strážky, which features on the right side a view of the town. The interior of the room is complemented by a Petrof piano from the 20th century. The upholstered chair (19th century), a table decorated with marqueterie and a chest of drawers decorated with brass armoring are all original pieces. The light-colored imperial-style settee in front of a painting with the title “Above the Grave,“ as well as the light-colored shelf and the cabinet were manufactured in western Slovakia and are typical examples of the imperial style furniture typical for our region. The grandfather clock in the same style and the clock with a gold-covered eagle date from the early 19th century and are also of domestic origin. In the built-in cupboard, we can see dinnerware dating from the first half of the 19th century. It was manufactured in the French town of Sévres. The room used to serve as a music salon. This toiletry table in the imperial style is originally from the castle in Strážky, and its bottom part is decorated with brass armoring, as well as this tall shelf – a chest of drawers from the 19th century. The decorative vase on the toiletry table was made in Vienna in the second half of the 19th century. This table with an expandable tabletop (late 18th century), the two chairs (late 19th century) and the upholstered canapé in the imperial style were also part of the original furnishings. The trunk, decorated with marqueterie and ivory, is originally from Western Europe and was manufactured in the 16th century. The last room has a balcony and was originally a study. The neo-classicist cabinet (late 19th century), the late imperial style stools (late 19th century) and the Biedermeier seat, as well as both chests of drawers (late 19th century) are from the estate of Margita Czóbelova.

These two rococo vases were made in the German town of Meissen. From here, we have a great view of the English park, which was planted by Ondrej Szirmay in the early 19th century. The room is also decorated with artwork by artists from the Spiš region.

Let us return to the dining room, where we can enter the second wing of the castle.

In the smoking saloon, paintings by the castle’s last baroness, Margita Czóbelova, are on display. She was a gifted artist.  Margita Czóbelová  was the last descendant of the famous dynasty and the niece of L. Mednyánszky. Just like him, she had artistic talent. She and her sister studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in the years 1915-1916, and she also learned a lot from Mednyánszky himself. She created a lot of paintings of the Strážky castle and its surroundings, especially the town itself. She had many talents and spoke Hungarian, German, French and English fluently. She also mastered the Slovak language perfectly and used whichever language was appropriate for the occasion. The baroness appreciated the castle’s library very much and spent her whole life there. People often saw her take walks or ride horses. The sister of Mednyánszky, Margita, who was the mother of the last baroness, painted the work “Children in the park.“ This big iron trunk was manufactured in the late 16th century. A more modern complement to this room are the samples of clothes from the turn of the 20th century, which are displayed here, as well as the hats and shoes on display,  which include evening attire as well as examples of  simple underwear of the period, often decorated with ruches. We are now in the rounded tower, where portraits  of the painter’s family and friends are displayed. László Mednyánszky most often worked on nature paintings as well as on figurative art. Here, we can see precious portraits of the people he was close to. This portrait of his father, interestingly, was painted in this very tower. Another noteworthy portrait is that of his good friend Zsigmund Justh. A student of his, Ferdinand Katon, created these  portraits of Margita and Márie Anna Czóbelova as children.

We have entered the first room of the László Mednyánszky gallery. It used to serve as a dining room for guests. László Mednyánszky was an important Central European painter of the last third of the 19th century and the early 20th century, and as one of the few Hungarian painters at the time, he reacted directly to different schools of painting. He was able not just to absorb them, but also to change them and adapt them to his own work and thus influence other painters. In the second half of the 19th century, he made a significant contribution to the liberation of painting from the restrictions imposed by the academies and the conventions dominant at the time. Even though he came from an aristocratic family, he felt close to simple people and had a solitary migrant lifestyle. From the large number of preserved items, his  paintings as well as his drawings, we can understand the personality of Mednyánszky, the painter as well as the man. Throughout his entire life, the town of Strážky  was a place to where he frequently returned, a place of refuge. He had strong ties to the city and his only permanent studio was located here. The diaries of Mednyánszky are a rich fund that documents his thoughts about arts and society. Their transcription from the Greek into our alphabet and the subsequent translation into German and Hungarian have become an important aid in the interpretation of his life as an artist. After Eduard Mednyánszky married Maria Anna, née Szirmay, in 1851, the couple had a son, Ladislav, who was born on April 23, 1852 in Beckov. His childhood was dominated by strong family traditions. His mother, an unusually educated woman, was a painter, and when her children grew older, she introduced  them to the arts as well. Since Ladislav, from a young age, was a very sickly child, she protected him from outside influences and pampered him with love and understanding. In 1863, Thomas Ender, a painter and aquarellist from Vienna, came to Strážky to instruct the young boy. Between 1870-1872, the young artist, due to the wishes of his practically inclined family, started to prepare for his studies at the Swiss polytechnic school. His family later respected his decision not to continue his technical studies and supported him in his artistic inclinations. He enrolled in the academy in Munich, where in 1872, he studied under Professor Alexander Straehuber and a year later, in the class of Otto Seity. After his parents’ death, he dealt with the loss through his art. During this period, his artwork was dominated by the theme of death and had a very melancholy and mystic feel. In the years 1897 to 1898, he was introduced to the bookseller Jozef Wolfner, who became his representative, sold his artwork and also was a friend to him. During his last visit, in 1897, the only solo exhibition of Mednyánszky was held in the gallery Georges Petit, where a lot of impressionists and modernists exhibited. After 1900, his visits to  Strážky became rare. He spent the majority of his time traveling, in Vienna or in Budapest. In his work, a return to older themes and a change of his artistic handwriting can be seen.

The First World War reached the painter in Vienna. As a 62-year-old, he enlisted in the army and worked as a war journalist at the front. His time in the army became a very strong and emotional experience for him, which he expressed in his work. In many preserved sketches and artwork, we can see war-related themes, landscapes and subjects. In 1916, he was injured at the front and a year later, he returned to the front, this time in Italy. In the spring of 1918, exhausted from his injuries, he returned to Strážky. Following his recovery, he returned to Budapest, where he continued working. By the end of the year, his state worsened and he died in Vienna on April 17, 1919.

In his early days as an artist, Strážky was one of his favorite motifs (Bell-tower in Strážky). He captured its landscape in impressionist and increasingly thought-out compositions. “I look for colors as well as for shapes, I am inspired by the quality of the air and the smell of flowers, the hottest heat and the coldest winter.“ (14.12. 1895, Budapest).  Around 1900, influenced by Impressionism, he created compositions of blossoming flowers and vines in lighter colors. He broke with the darker chamber compositions and began using more vibrant colors. (Spring in a garden in Strážky, Trees in bloom, Spring in Strážky park). A change in his depiction of landscapes occurred around 1910, when the individual compositions came to be no longer as symmetrical as the previous ones, and were painted with a much more energetic brushstroke (Bog-land, Behind the Table in the Garden, Young Girl in the Field, Winter Sun in a Landscape with a River).

The second thematic group dominant in his work were portraits and studies of pageboys, farmers, skinners, workers and vagrants – the simple people who caught his interest not just in Slovakia, but sometimes also during his stays in Budapest, Paris and Vienna. On the premises of the Strážky castle, regular meetings of  artists and writers, called salons, took place and Ladislav attended some of them.

Among the notable works on display in the Strážky castle is a painting titled The Condemned, which was created during the so-called period of Sadism and expresses themes of passivity and complete submission to one’s destiny. The artist composed a painting titled Slave in a similar style at a later time. The painting is now part of the permanent exhibition at the National Gallery in Bratislava.

The symbolist-melancholic artwork dating from the early 1890s reached its peak around 1895, when the artist had to come to terms with the death of his father. Feelings of loneliness were mirrored in his artwork. (Dying Person, Gravedigger). One theme is the individual in the mass.

The person of László Mednyánszky is forever connected with the Strážky castle. It is a crucial element of the artistic development of his work and it also documents the influence of the local genius loci.

A library for highly educated people who work in the fields of science and education – another way to describe the Horvath Stansith family. They were followers and supporters of Protestant faith. This was a decisive factor in their orientation towards Germany, and also had an influence on the general focus of the library. In 1584, the son of the family’s founding father, GREGOR HORVATH STANSITH, established a school for boys of the Spiš region’s aristocracy, which he paid for himself and which had a high level, in part thanks to teachers brought there from Germany. Gregor himself taught rhetoric, dialectics and etiquette. The family ran the school until 1711, some 123 years. Thanks to Marie Anna, a handwritten catalog where all the books acquired before 1875 were listed was made. The library had some 6 341 volumes at the time, of which 64 dated from the 16th century. Later, works of belles-lettres in the main world languages, maps, historical volumes and travel literature were added to the library.

The library also played an important role in the education of the two children of Marie Anna, Ladislav and Margita /Miri/, who grew up without the company of other children in the romantic setting of the castle and its beautiful surroundings. Margita married Baron Štefan Czóbel in 1887, who had authored a number of books on philosophy and aesthetics, and who added an extensive collection of philosophical literature to the library. Their daughter, Margita Czóbelová /1891-1972/, the last member of the family, started designing a new library catalogue in the 1930s, but never completed it. She was rather artistic in her inclinations. During the Second World War, the library started decaying and a lot of books were lost for good. Today, some 8 420 volumes, magazines and maps make up the library. The oldest preserved book is a work by the Roman historian Plinius titled Naturalis historia, which was published in 1518. Books from the 16th up to the 19th century were preserved. On the left wall, the family tree of the MEDNYÁNSZKEJ family from the first half of the 19th century can be seen. The MEDNYÁNSZKEJ family allegedly moved to Slovakia from Poland in the 13th century and formed its predicate during the peak of the Middle Ages, after the example of a town pictured in the left bottom corner. The light-colored settee in the imperial style, composed of two seats with marqueterie on the back and a canapé, were manufactured at the beginning of the 19th century, just like these precious wool carpets, which were made from  hand in the Middle East in the 19th century. Under the window, basic information about the library’s fund and its history is displayed. The following two rooms used to serve as dining rooms for guests and are currently part of the László Mednyánszky Gallery.

A common feature of all of the artist’s works is their expression of moods. “Everything in my work is about expressing moods“ – he wrote in his diary on December 14, 1895. “I look for colors as well as for shapes, I am inspired by the quality of the air and the smell of flowers, the hottest heat and the coldest winter.“ He was able to relate to the moods of nature and his own moods are mirrored in his depictions of nature. His time at the army, which László Mednyánszky spent at the Russian, Serbian and Italian front, effectively put an end to his work as a painter. The journalist and army painter Mednyánszky, a man of harrowing sensibility, was knocked down by the dramas of the people and the landscape he was surrounded by. “Construction of a trench,” “Trenches in the winter” and “Soldiers in the Mountains.” His last stays in Strážky took place in the summer and autumn of 1918. The artist died, lonely and troubled, without any family, in Vienna on April 17, 1919. He was buried at the Vienna Municipal Cemetery. Since 1966, his grave is located in a Budapest cemetery on Kerepesi street. The extensive and extraordinary oeuvre of Mednyánszky is unparalleled by any of his compatriots. He can only be compared, valued and appreciated against the background of what was happening in Europe, especially in Paris, at the time.

In the corridor, we can see most of the landscape paintings that the artist created.  He worked in larger formats, and his landscape paintings were often completed by figurative subjects. This selection of paintings also includes works by the castle’s last owner, Margita Czóbelova. On 29.7.2011, we celebrated the 120-year-anniversary of her birth. She spent her childhood in Strážky, with her sister Mariana and her brother Štefan. The atmosphere in the family was always deeply influenced by the arts. The frequent visits of her uncle László Mednyánszky allowed her to observe his artistic talents and he certainly had a great influence on her subsequent development as an artist. The castle in Strážky became a favored destination for summer visits of her father’s sister as well – the poet Minka

Czóbel, who is considered a founding figure of modern Hungarian poetry. Family friends such as Zsigmund Justh, Gyula Pekár and the painter Arpád Feszty also liked to visit the castle, and together with László Mednyánszky, they took tours of the High Tatra Mountains, rode boats on the river and performed theatre pieces that would often have their only premiere in the park, for the entertainment of summer guests.

In the school year 1915-1916, Margita and her sister Marianna started their studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. The events of the First World War and the fact that their brother Štefan, who enlisted in the army as a volunteer, was not married, most likely motivated both sisters to return home, because the parents, and especially the mother, found it hard to deal with this time of anxiety and hope of their son returning home from the army safe and sound. Their hopes were not fulfilled, Štefan was killed at the front and his sister Marianna succumbed to a serious disease in 1929. The young Margita became the only support for her aging parents. She buried her father in 1932 and her mother in 1937. She loved taking daily walks in the mountains, riding horses, winter skiing trips and painting. From a young age up until her death, she kept a diary in which she took stock of everyday events. She made it a point to walk and her slight and fragile figure became part of the local history not just of Strážky, but also of Keyžmarok and Spišská Belá, where she would often visit friends. Living in a society with new rules must surely have been very difficult for the well-educated baroness Czóbel. As she aged, the life within the walls of the castle, with its lack of running water and sewer system, must also have been very demanding for her physically. When her faithful maid Mária Bednárová died in 1968, the maid’s daughter Mária Milistenferová took over caring for the baroness. She came to the castle daily and brought her anything that she might have needed.

On March 13, 1972, baroness Margita Czobelova passed away at the age of 81. The town officials respected her will and she was buried in the family’s tomb. The castle, as well as  its furniture and park, fell into the possession of the Slovak National Gallery.

Jahrhunderts an.

Jahrhunderts in Wien.

April 1852 in Beckov beider Sohn Ladislav geboren.

Dezember 1895 in Budapest.

April 1919 in Wien.

Usunięto wtedy wysoki dach i pierwsze piętro. Do kasztelu przylegało skrzydło gospodarcze. Ostatnimi męskimi potomkami rodu Horvath Stansith byli bracia Baltazar i Imrich.

Historia galerii portetów należącej do rodziny Horvath Stansith sięga pierwszego ćwierćwiecza XVIII wieku. Schody prowadzą do dawnego ogrodu zimowego. Znajdujący sie tutaj fortepian marki Petrof pochodzi z XX wieku. Przejdziemy do kolejnej sali. W szafie wnękowej wystawiono komplet jadalny z I połowy XIX wieku. Wykonano go we Francji w Sevres. Stolik karciany z ruchomym blatem (koniec XVIII wieku), dwa krzesełka (koniec XIX w.) i empirowa wyściełana sofa należą do oryginalnego wyposażenia kasztelu. Szafy wnękowe były wykonane w pierwszej połowie XVIII stulecia. Skrzynia z XVI wieku pochodzi z Europy Zachodniej. Jest to skrzynia cechowa bogato intarsjowana i zdobiona kością słoniową. Ostatnia sala z balkonem służyła jako pracownia. Neoklasycystyczny gabinet (koniec XIX w.), późnoempirowe krzesła (około 1830 r.), biedermeierowy fotel oraz obie bieliźniarki (koniec XIX w.) należały do Margity Czobel.

Wróćmy z powrotem do jadalni i obejrzyjmy drugie skrzydło zamku.

Margita Czobel to ostania dziedziczka znanego rodu i córka siostry Ladislava Mednyanszkiego.

Wielka żelazna skrzynia pochodzi z XVI wieku.

W 1863 roku przybył do Strażek wiedeński malarz i autor akwareli Thomas Ender, by zająć się edukacją młodzieńca.

Pierwsza wojna światowa zastała go w Wiedniu.

Okres symbolistyczno-melancholijny w twórczosci malarza, sięgający początków lat 90-tych XIX wieku, najsilniej uwidocznił się około roku 1895, kiedy to zmarł ojciec artysty.

Tak można by określić rodzinę Horvath Stansith. Jej członkowie byli żarliwymi wyznawcami i obrońcami protestantyzmu.

Biblioteka odegrała też znaczącą rolę w kształceniu dwojga dzieci Marii Anny – Ladislava i Margity (Miri), wyrastające bez towarzystwa rówieśników w romantycznym otoczeniu kasztelu i pięknej przyrody. Podczas drugiej wojny światowej biblioteka zaczęła upadać i wiele książek bezpowrotnie zaginęło. Dziś liczy sobie 8429 książek, czasopism i map.

„Wszystko we mnie dąży do wyrażenia emocji“ – zapisał w dzienniku 14.12.1895 roku. Wiecznie niespokojny i osamotniony 17 kwietnia 1919 roku umiera w Wiedniu sam, bez rodziny. Ojca pochowała w 1932 roku, a matkę w 1937.
